The early Chinese who came to Western Australia founded the Chung Wah Association in 1909. They were very enterprising and had collected sufficient funds to lay the foundation stone in the following year (1910) to build the Chung Wah Hall at 128 James Street, Northbridge (in metropolitan Perth) where it stands to this very day.
More details on the history of the Association are provided in the following documents:
- History of Chung Wah Part One 1909 - 1985
- History of Chung Wah Part Two 1985 - 1995
For almost 100 years, the founding objectives of the Association focus on three areas: Welfare (Community Services), Education (Chinese Schools) and Cultural activities. Whilst achieving these objectives, often under tough and challenging conditions, the Chinese community are also making significant contributions to the growth, development and prosperity of Western Australia. |

| Past Presidents of Chung Wah Association |
In March 1909, Louis Wah Louey was elected as the first president of Chung Wah Association. The Association grew from strength to strength.
However, the effectiveness of the Chung Wah Association to continue as an organisation, for fulfilling the social and cultural needs of the Chinese community in Western Australia was reduced by the rapid depletion of the Chinese population in the late 1920s - early 1960s. During this period not only had the Great Depression made it almost impossible for many of the small Chinese businesses to continue, but also most Chinese, who had arrived in the early 1900s, were of retirement age and wished to return to China for their remaining years.
The Association at this time was kept alive by a small number of families. The Association was barely managed by a skeleton committee. However, in June 1969, a move by James Leewood started to rejuvenate the Association. |
