President's Message
The Executive Committee is now into the second year in office. At the recent Annual General Meeting held on the 24th April 2010, the Association was pleased to note that five new Life Members of the Association was unanimously elected. They were Mr Kim Tai TAN; Mr Simon LEE AO; Dr Bob TAN JP; Mr Tien Shang SU and Mrs Esther CHANG.

The Annual General Meeting was scheduled to be held on the 17th April 2010, but because the quorum required for the AGM of a minimum of 100 members was only present about 45 minutes after the scheduled time required under the Constitution, the member felt that the AGM had to be adjourned to the following week. There were 127 members present on the 17th April 2010. However at the adjourned AGM on the 24th April 2010 there were only 87 members present. This clearly indicates that the Constitution needs to be reviewed to ensure that such a situation does not occur again.

One of the important issues that was evident at the AGM was the profile of the members attending the AGM on both the two days. Almost 80 % of the members present were senior members from the Community Age Care Group. Perhaps this year being not an election year was a reason for the poor turnout of members. Noticeably absence were members from the other subcommittees and groups. Or maybe there were no contentious issues that were of concerns to the members. However I would encourage members to attend the annual general meeting as it represents a good opportunity for members to express their views on the Association and get to know the Executive Committee members.

On 07 May 2010, I together with 800 Chinese communities' leaders from all over the world attended the 5th World Overseas Chinese and Friends Conference held in Beijing. The Conference was organized by the National Organisation of Returned Overseas Chinese. There were about 20 delegates from all over Australia. The three delegates from Western Australia were Mr Khoon TAN, President of the WA Chinese Chamber of Commerce; Mr Pang Ban Zhao, President of the Fujian Association of WA and myself. It was a great opportunity to catch up with old friends and make new ones. One of the highlights of our trip was the conducted visit to the Shanghai EXPO 2010. We spent a day trying to walk through the hundreds of pavilions from over 200 countries and organizations from all over the world. The exhibits displaying the latest modern technologies and best attractions from each country were simply fantastic! We found the event well managed, safe, efficient and clean. Although I read a report later that said the people attended on the same day as we, was about 12,000, I would feel the huge place of over 5 square kilometers would easily accommodate much more people. I strongly recommend members and friends to visit the Shanghai EXPO. It is a once in a life opportunity, just like the Beijing Olympic 2008, to be a part of the history of modern China in the making. For those who wish to go there, I suggest to set aside at least 5 days and to wear your most comfortable shoes. The Shanghai EXPO opens from the 1 May 2010 to 31 October 2010.

Finally the Executive Committee together with the Centenary Celebration Committee headed by Meng WONG as the Executive Vice Chairperson has been working extremely hard to ensure the success of our Centenary Gala Ball and Show to be held on the 17th July at 6.30pm Saturday at the Burswood Grand Ballroom. We need all of you to turn up to ensure the success of our grand occasion. Tickets are available from the Chung Wah office.
